Reasonable adjustments for music exams

My DS has autism. He has a spiky profile and attends a special school. He is 15 and won't be doing gcses. He might do English entry level 2 in functional skills (not level 2 which is a gcse 4, entry level 2 which is like a 7-9 year old level) to give a bit of context of where he is at.

Anyway he has been playing an instrument and his teacher thinks he could sit an exam.

But I dont really understand if I should ask for adjustment or what to ask for.

He needs things said more simply, and broken down. Eg if an examiner said stand there and play your first piece. It would be too much, he needs one instruction at a time. He might not even understand first piece if that wasn't the terminology used by his teacher.

Has anyone had reasonable adjustments in a music exam? How did it go.

We have always found ABRSM to be helpful with reasonable adjustments. This page and the links on it explain what is available.

It's all done online nowadays. You just record your pieces in your own home/at your teacher's and send them in.

Is that how it's done? That will be much easier for him if so.

Yes, both ABRSM and Trinity offer online exams, you can look at their websites or talk to your teacher. There are also options to replace the technical aspects (scales, aural) with a fourth piece. It also doesn't need to be recorded in 1 go, so he could have breaks in between to decompress.

It isn’t all done online now. It depends on what you want. For example, performance grades are digital but practical grades are still F2F with ABRSM.

Just remember, if your ds would like to continue, MTB might suit him. Exams are 100% online for all grades, they offer a wider repertoire to choose from and all their materials are free to download, too. It's
