Downside of applying for DLA

Our DD is 4, she is diagnosed with a global developmental delay and is similar to a 3 year old, she has an EHCP and needs a one to one during the day at Reception.

She is our only child so we are not sure how a normal 4 year old acts. She is verbal although a lot of the time just quotes Bluey episodes at us, she needs help dressing and feeding, as although she can do these things she has no interest.

She has an autism/adhd assessment later in the month.

I think we should apply for DLA to help pay for cover after school, but my husband thinks it’s inappropriate and he’s worried it will cause problems for her in later life.

Are there any downsides to applying for DLA?

DH is mistaken, claiming DLA doesn’t have a downside in the future. Apply for DLA. Call for the forms and use Cerebra’s guide to help you complete the form.

Why does your husband think it is inappropriate and what problems could it cause later in life?

He is wrong though. You should apply for DLA.

I honestly don’t understand his reservations, he hasn’t done any research so maybe feels because we can cope with our daughter he doesn’t feel we have a problem. Whereas I feel as she cannot go to regular holiday camps as she needs one to one in unfamiliar settings she does qualify

I find it strange DH is happy for DD to have an EHCP but objects to DLA. I would point out to him that isn’t rational.

If you haven’t already, it is also worth looking at your LA’s short breaks offer.
