Hi
My little girl is 29months.
Iv had concerns regards her development for some time now. Unfortunately I have come up against waiting list after waiting list, staff sickness among HV etc and seem to be no farther forward regard help, advice, reassurance or any support for either me or my daughter.
Concerns
Very limited pointing for request, no pointing for interest.
Hand leads for request.
Often does not respond to name unless motivated, eg when looking for us in Softplay, call her name she will look.
Speech poor, only speech is for labelling things, or small sentences such as ready steady go, all done, put it in which Ashe seems to have picked up from miss rachel.
Finger flicks. Seems to have intensified in the last month. Also shudders and holds mouth open when doing this.
No interest at all in younger brother.
No interest in other children.
Seldom takes people on when out and about.
Limited understand of language. Cannot get shoes for example when asked, but interestingly can identify shoes on shoe cards.
Has started lining up random objects to count them.

Things that make me doubt myself
Often affectionate.
Can sit and watch tv and chill out
Can count to 10
Can name simple objects, such as animals, some shapes and some colours.
Pretend plays, feeds dolls, uses different objects for hats.
Can complete jigsaw puzzles
Plays with toys appropriately such as shape sorter, balls down her tower. Pays with her wee farm and animals however repetitive.

I don't know if anyone has been in a similar situation and things have resolved and speech etc has improved, or someone who has had the same experience would have advice of what helped.

Please be gentle as I'm currently pregnant, sleep deprived with my 8 month old and extremely emotionally fragile. Thanks

If you are concerned about speech, have you checked if you can self refer to SALT? And if you are worried, have you spoken to the GP? Although some of what you list can be typical of some toddlers.

Hi
Thanks for your response. Sorry if I was not clear but I have been to gp, hv, and have seen a paeds consultant and SALT through NHS. This was at 15months, she was due to be recalled as all said she was apparently too young. She was seen by OT recently and is hitting all that they require in an assessment to "pass" what was appropriate for her age. Mostly able to complete tasks which were mostly based on following instructions to put things inside things, pegs, coins in pig, drawing on paper, building blocks etc, which was positive.
We were seen by SALT which was a basic assessment and she was discharged as again she was too young.
We recently went to see a private SALT as she is now a good bit older and SALT NHS waiting list are extremely long. She advised that my DD attention is poor and has engaged her in sessions to try and encourage her attention and concentration with the view she will communicate more and be able to do 2 part instructions, such as build a tower of blocks by reciting what is picture in the blocks such as a star or an animal. All seems like it would be beneficial.
In ways my dd is very bright. Her lack of understanding and following instructions is what I find most challenging st the minute as I'm finding it difficult to meet her needs, and often feel myself reluctant in sending her to childminder with fear of her being thirsty or hunger, or dirty bum that turns sore as she's currently teething. As she can't communicate this well

Ah your OP didn’t mention the GP or paed. It is unusual for DC to be diagnosed or even formally assessed for ASD at 15 months, so it isn’t really surprising they said they would need to wait until older to see how DD develops/developed. You say DD is going to be recalled, when is DD due to be seen again? If you are concerned, you could call the secretary to ask about bringing the appointment forward. As difficult as it is, if DD had been seen by paeds and SALT by 15 months, it does mean HCPs have listened to you.

It is worth contact Home Start to see if they can support you.

There are ways around DD not being able to communicate things like hunger at nursery or at a childminder. For example, they could offer DD a drink every hour. Both should be used to babies and young children who can’t communicate.

That is for your input. Yes I have contacted secretaries etc and you name it I have done it. She was due to be seen in 6 months, and so far she has not been.
I was going someone with lived experience might pick up on this post.

My posts are based on lived experience. If you aren’t getting anywhere with the secretary, try PALS.
