ADHD and immune system

I'm a long time lurker, hope you don't mind me posting.

My question is.... do your children with ADHD have more illnesses (coughs, colds, tummy bugs) than other DC?

DS is currently awaiting assessment for ADHD, Autism and some other health issues, school who have been really supportive have flagged his attendance as low. Obviously, I'm aware that it is low but he seems to pick up every bug that is going around and I really do try to get him into school even if he is a bit under the weather. I have two older boys who were just never this ill.

I have seen some articles in medical journals online that suggest there might be links with ADHD and increased childhood illnesses and just wanted to ask if this is something that other people are noticing.

He is otherwise healthy, eats loads of fruit and veg etc but will be ill with something almost every week. This has been since he was small, he's now 8 and doesn't seem to be growing out of it.

TIA

DS has ADHD and autism, no he doesn't but his twin who is NT gets everything!

DS did have a dreadful virus and ended up in A&E. I noticed at the bottom of his notes it said due to his autism he was at more risk but I have no idea why.

@MarthaJonesPhone I'm probably clutching at straws, he just seems to be permanently ill. It's not even him faking illnesses, he is genuinely ill every time. It's so frustrating for him and us.

That's interesting about your DS notes, maybe there is something to it. Now I just need to figure out what I can do about it

Nope - exceptionally good immune system and hardly ever ill.

Myself and eldest daughter have adhd and rarely get poorly, my younger two are both asd plus a chromosome deletion and they are clinically vulnerable due to low immune systems. Thinking about it My asd/adhd family members all seem to never get poorly as in viruses but we all get run down a bit due to burnout. A very restricted diet can cause vulnerabilities to your immune system this is more common in asd (and adhd if they forget to eat or eat very little and are underweight)

@Sprinkles211 thanks for you response. I do think this is probably part of it. He is absolutely drained by Wednesday every week due to both behavioural meltdowns and very frequent siezures. We keep sending him into school and he probably is getting very run down.

Without any diagnoses we are working on a best bet of what we can do to help and it constantly feels like we are putting him through more than he can handle which is heartbreaking.

Hey there,
Take a look at this podcast and also check out Georgia Ede.

If brain issues are caused by or exacerbated by metabolic dysfunction then it makes sense that people with them are generally more ill, or suffer more illnesses.
