Adhd medication side effect? should i stop?

ds12 started on medikinet XL 10mg yesterday. He didn’t have much notable side effects however this evening he became so angry and aggressive that i had never seen him like this before. This has shocked me so much that i’m considering stopping the meds until i can get in touch with consultant on tuesday.
Is this a common side effect or should i be worried about it and stop?

My ds has tried medikinet twice. Once at 13 and once a few months ago.

the first time I took him off it within a few days as he seemed to be drugged. He didn’t eat at all and lost so much weight. he needs to eat a lot to sustain his weight and is on the slim side.

the second time he was 19 and I thought as he was bigger he would tolerate it better. He was off again within a few days. As well as not eating he also seemed really aggressive at times. Really angry and shouty (non verbal).

I took him off the meds straight away and then contacted the provider to let them know what had done. Both times they agreed with me.

on the other hand dd has been on it over a year with no real side affects.

it’s not easy but id advise you to go with your gut instinct

Thank you @SaulGone he refused to take it this morning and is completely manic his adhd seems out of control. I don’t really understand if the medication is out of their system 8 hrs after taking sure it shouldn’t affect him by now even if it’s a side effect.
Not sure if it’s the lack of sleep in the last few days but feel a bit heartbroken as had so much hopes that this would improve all of our lives

Has your son gone on any other meds since?

We tried the adhd meds and all were the same. They just didn’t agree with him. we haven’t been able to find a adhd med that works. I don’t know where to go from here as even college is struggling to cope with the noise from him.

we have been told about risperidone having some success in people with adhd by his psychiatrist so it’s something we are looking into. But my son is 20.

inhet you with the holding onto hope that these meds will improve your life. I was heartbroken when medikinet didn’t work as I’d been so hopeful it would help calm him down. I remember practically crying on the phone to his psychiatrist when they said there was no other meds to try. I think this is why they mentioned risperidone.

Thats how i feel. completely devastated as so many of my friends’s children are happily medicated with no issue.
My gut feeling and fear that he has so many other underlying potential problems that they might be the one inducing most of his struggles. He is more than likely odd and i think bipolar traits are might also be on the cards and I don’t know what the consultant will suggest tomorrow but we have already paid £400 for the consultation and the meds as such a long wait for his paediatrician to see us and can’t afford to carry on paying for it all.

I feel you, it’s so hard. My ds is such a happy soul, so loving and charming but the noise is so loud it really drives me up the wall. He’s also constantly moving and bouncing. I really hoped medikinet would slow him down. It took a few months to ‘grieve’ the medication not working.

there is other medications out there to try that he may tolerate. It’s just trial and error. Not great when you are paying for it but I hope you find something he can tolerate.
