EP primary school

Hello all,

My son is 6 years old and in year 1 at primary school, He’s always struggled with school and has had heavy input from the SENco just to get him through the day. (He does half days) the things that have previously worked with him are no longer working so the school has asked for permission to get a EP in to assess him.
has anyone gone through anything similar and know how long this roughly takes?

Outwith the EHCNA/reassessment of needs process there isn’t a set timescale. There is a lot of pressure on EP time so it could be months.

Does DS have an EHCP? If not, you should request an EHCNA. On their website IPSEA has a model letter you can use. If DS already has an EHCP you should request an early review.

In the meantime, why is DS doing half days? Is alternative provision in place?

Thank you.

the school have started the process for an EHCP so we’re getting somewhere!

he cannot cope with doing a full day, he gets very over stimulated and has violent outbursts if things get to much. It was in his and the other children’s best interests for us to shorten his day. We are slowly adding time on every week to hopefully get him back to full time but after the holidays he struggles going back to school. Since the Easter holidays he has had 5 days so far where he has completely refused to go into school and neither me or the teachers can get him in. We’ve been in the process for nearly 2 years now trying to figure out his triggers and ways to make going into school and staying at school easier.

When you say the school has started the EHCP process, has an EHCNA request actually been made to the LA? If so, when?

If DS can’t attend school full-time the LA has a duty to ensure he still receives a suitable, full-time education. Alternative provision should be in place either in addition to part time school if part time school is appropriate or instead of school if it isn’t appropriate (and it doesn’t sound like it is). On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use for this.
