Has anyone come across this as a recommendation for an asd teenager? Has been recommended for use in school... so not CAMHS or with trained staff.
I am slightly cynical that this is a "quick response, low cost" option offered when she needs actual support!

My (limited) understanding is that DBT was developed for helping people with Borderline Personality Disorder. It is like CBT but helps more with people who feel emotions more intensely. Like CBT, it is supposed to help change people's unhelpful thinking and behavior. However, DBT reinforces the importance of validating ones feelings and focuses on accepting who you are.

I personally haven't heard of it being used to help people with ASD but I can see how it could help, particularly a teenage girl.

However, are you saying that the school are offering to give her therapy themselves when not trained or recommending that you seek DBT for her?

About 8-10 years ago I was diagnosed with BPD (now I believe to be misdiagnosed and have now have a more fitting ADHD diagnosis) I was searching for DB therapist and they were few and far between. My local NHS trust simply didn't provide it and other ones I had heard of that did only offered it as group therapy. What I'm getting at is, as far as I'm aware it's not that common.

Thank you for your reply. DBT was recommended to school by LA autism support. They sent a booklet! To be worked through with a ta.......
My DD is not overly emotional - in fact the opposite, she struggles to recognise her own feelings and has poor interoception.

Not convinced it is an appropriate intervention 😔 but struggling to find evidence to support this.
