Co-production meeting after draft EHCP issued

Hey!

Just wondering on anyone's thoughts really as I've had an awful two days following the admissions of mainstream. My DS(4) has had his draft EHCP come through and we are currently day 6 out of the standard 15 days. I asked the writer whether we should ignore what the admissions for mainstream say even though there was a high probability that he would be accepted as it's our catchment as it's also the school I want for parental preference on EHCP. He told me to let him know who he was accepted to and if it's the same school then it would be put on the final EHCP. Fast forward to 12pm and I get a phonecall from said school that the council have not been in touch and to organise a co-production meeting that she will attend too.

Co-production meeting has never been mentioned. I chased the LA when reaching the 20 weeks and suddenly it was at panel 3 days later with the decision coming through the next day. I don't know whether this is the norm or what to even prepare for? I have someone going over his EHCP privately and this meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Thanks

You don’t have to have a co-production meeting if you don’t want to.

If you go ahead, you need a list of the amendments you want to request and references to evidence to support those requests. Carefully check all needs are in B and each need has all the corresponding provision that is required in F. Check for woolly wording - this is very important. Look for wording such as “access to”, “would benefit from”, “regular”, “up to”, “or equivalent”, “opportunities for”, “as appropriate”, “would be useful/helpful”, “such as”, “e.g.”, “etc.”, “as required”, “as advised”, “key adult(s)”, “small group”. Make sure therapies are in F, not G.

The LA should consult schools after you have had the chance to make representations and state your preferred school. The school named in section I will override the offer made via the normal admissions procedures. However, there are limited reasons the LA can refuse to name your preferred placement, so if the same placement is your preferred school you can request that is named.

Thank you for your response. I have someone who specialises in EHCPs looking over it as well as my son's key worker and 1:1 highlighting a paper copy for amendments. There is a lot of copy and paste especially from the EP report and therefore enquired about someone going through it as I honestly don't have a clue what to look for. Appreciate your helpful tips though! Thank you

Don’t take the 1:1/key workers word for it. Lots of school staff don’t understand the legalities of the EHCP system.
