Not quite sure of your question as I think you missed out some words?

A SEN plan is something the school does as a first step if they see a child needing extra support.
An EHCP is a much 'bigger' thing if a school cannot support within their usual systems. It requires an assessment by the Local Authority, formal sign off etc etc.

My DD was on and off the SEN lists for years Ended up with an EHCP in y12!

If you can say more about your situation people can advise.

Hi My 3yo son has SEN plan in school (he's on the waiting list to be diagnosed for autism) and I keep seeing people talking about an EHCP. I'm sorry I'm very new to all of this. I'm really just wondering what the benefits is for it? And what it actually is? I've looked online but I'm getting confused with it all xx

I can't really help on early EHCPs (mine was 17 when she got hers).

Is this state? Do you mean nursery?

Broadly speaking though, if the SEN plan seems 'sufficient' then no EHCP will be needed. However if you are looking at ASD diagnosis at 3 years old, I guess it may well end up with an EHCP. This might for example specify 1-1 support at school, SALT, adjustments needed. If it became clear that your DS wouldn't cope in mainstream with only a bit of support then an EHCP would be needed to get eg full time 1-1 or to be placed in a special needs school. Schools have to show they have tried things and they aren't working before EHCPs get granted. If nursery start saying he won't cope in mainstream then you would definitely need an EHCP.

An EHCP is an education, health and care plan. It is a legal document that sets out a child’s needs and the provision they require to meet those needs. It can provide a level of support DC wouldn’t otherwise receive at a SEN support level. IPSEA and SOSSEN are charities who have lots of helpful information on their websites that is worth reading.

You can request an EHCNA yourself. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use to send to the LA.

If you don’t have to appeal the process takes 20 weeks. LAs often think they can get away with taking longer, but the timescales are statutory and can be enforced. Unfortunately, many do have or appeal, sometimes more than once, which can add months and months.

Schools have to show they have tried things and they aren't working before EHCPs get granted.

LAs like to say this, and it can make providing evidence easier, but this is not part of the legal test.
