My son is 7 and autistic and has for quite some time started running around in the school which has really impacted his learning (basically they can't get him to sit down in order for him to learn). He has an EHCP and quite recently been suspended (without informing the EHC team) because of his running behaviour. Obviously I was fuming about this and immediately called the local authority for an emergency review. The school are struggling to sought strategies to manage his running and quite frankly I'm not impressed. The review today suggested that an EP an OT devise new strategies to see if that helps and review this in June. I want him to stay mainstream as i feel he has the ability to cope and his autism isnt severe.
If anyone can give me any advice on how we can reduce his running at school. I've had convos with him to state that he can't do this, I've bought heavy insoles to slow him down etc. Please let me know if you have any strategies that might help.

If the LA doesn’t amend the EHCP sufficiently you should appeal.

DS needs ongoing direct SIOT input. He needs proper sensory provision throughout the day. Not half-hearty movement breaks that are often found in MS. For example, the school could look at sensory swings, a trampoline, heavy lifting tasks, under desk exercise bike pedals, resistance bands, weighted vest, lots of breaks to run around outside, the school could do the daily mile, standing desk…
