Morning,
my 18yo DS (section 20 LAC leaver) is about to finish school/college. He has to leave the residential school in May at the end of course. It is named on his EHCP, but he has to leave (care home rules). He plans on going to uni.
I am concerned about him coming home (he’s been 52 weeks for the last 2-3years).
social care have no plan in place for him, what normally happens between leaving college and starting uni re accommodation and support please?
thank you

Was this not discussed at the last AR (and even the ARs before that)? There’s no one set plan, and unless you push the LA will quietly prefer for you to take on care because it is cheaper for them. If that is suitable/you don’t want that push for the LA to accommodate DS elsewhere e.g. supported living. Has a transition review from social care not taken place? Children’s Services must continue to support until Adult Services take over or assess as not required. As a child leaving care DS should get a personal advisor, some areas rely on individuals requesting this, so you will need to be proactive.

If DS is going to university DSA needs applying for.

His EHCP has been recently updated but nothing about transition to uni. We had a massive legal battle to stop social care from removing him, unlawfully, from his placement. The LGO were not impressed with them either. They backed down. His PA is being as unhelpful as possible. We requested a care act assessment. I am currently asking for a copy of it and they are being awkward. His old social worker (child social worker) was at the annual review and offered nothing. They all have the hump with me, because they lost the legal battle. And I’m not sure who to contact. The IRO was found at fault also.

Cerebra has a model letter on their website you can use to complain about lack of transition preparation/assessment. I would start there. Children’s Services must remain involved until transition to adult services is complete or adult services assessed as not required.
