ADHD medication - private route

After struggling for a while and being dismissed by the NHS, we went private and got DS (9) diagnosed privately with ASD and ADHD. I've asked GP to put him on ADHD pathway (I'm yet to hear from them), but there's a long waiting list and we'd like to try the medication sooner rather than later.

The team that assessed DS referred us to a child psychiatrist at GOSH (we will see them privately). Before starting the treatment they want a confirmation from my GP that they would accept shared care after tritation. Just to prepare myself - what are my options in terms of appealing if the GP says they would not do shared care?

You would probably need to find a new GP.

DD's psychiatrist required a letter from the GP agreeing to shared care in the event of diagnosis and medication before our first assessment appointment. I arranged an appointment with the GP to discuss before we went ahead.

From what I understand, GPs have the right to not agree to it. Some practices have a statement on their website.

You are likely to be on private prescriptions for at least 6 months before shared care would even be on the cards - they have to be stabilised on the right meds and dosage before it's handed over. The private provider is also responsible for doing all the check-ups - ours are now every 6 months.

DD was one of the lucky ones that got on with the first meds we tried and it was very quick and easy to find a happy balance, so it could take longer if you need to try a few options. It does seem to be tricker when ASD is in the mix too.
