Adhd medication

My son is 18 and doing A levels. He's really struggling with revision (just done mocks) and after doing 2 exams in one day, he couldn't do any work for several days. He's now asking for medication.

He was diagnosed adhd aged 8 so it was a long time ago. I'm not sure the doctor even has a record of this. He does get extra time but I think that's based more on school's assessments and slow processing.

For those of you with experience :

  • could medication help at this late stage?
  • would it be possible to get from GP and would they give it?
  • could it do any harm?

It will be in DS’s medical records, but a GP won’t initiate medication. All medication can have side effects. Does DS have any other access arrangements such as rest breaks?

Edited because I posted on wrong thread.

No other exam arrangements apart from extra time.

I think he is more looking for something which will help him focus for longer on revision.

It is worth speaking to the sixth form about other access arrangements.

Meds aren’t going to be a quick answer for revision at this point. Even if you go to a private psychiatrist, by the time you have an appointment, titrated meds and the first medication tried may not be the right one for DS, etc.

OK thanks. I think it's too late for access. He's OK to do one exam. It was just with 2 in one day and he thought some meds might help him revise better because currently he does about 1 hr revision to 3 hours off, a max of 3 hours per day during study leave. He's also doing particularly hard subjects which doesn't help.
