Speech and Language Unit placement, not sure if it's right?

My DS started school in September and had severe speech delay. He made huge progress by December and he had made quite some friends. His EHCP was approved and he has now started at the Speech Language Unit in the same school. If I am not wrong, he spends his mornings in the unit for English and Maths lessons. In the afternoon he goes back to the mainstream class. While I appreciate that he is getting help at the unit, I'm worried that he doesn't like it there. My son only has speech issues, no social or behavioral issues. Almost all other children (around 5) in the unit have autism (autistic tendencies) and some with behavioral issue. My son comes back hone everyday complaining that he's hit by one of the kids in his new class. He says that both him and his teacher tell the boy "no touching" but to no avail. I am not sure if I've made the right decision to have him go in the SL unit although, my son does need help with phonics and just being able to speak.

I would appreciate it if anybody could share their experience with children in the language unit. And how you'd navigate the situation if you were in my shoes.

Thanks for reading.

Hello there, my DS has an EHCP and will start school in Sep 24 and I was thinking about Language Unit and would be interested in any views. We live in NW2. Where does your DS goes to? Thanks

Have you spoken to the school/head of unit about the hitting? The unit needs to put measures in place to prevent DS getting hurt repeatedly. Sounds like the other child needs more support (although, rightly, the school won’t discuss that with you).

@Mummydxb We live in Hampshire. I had always wanted to send my DS to language unit, but because his EHCP wasn't finalised until last month, he spent autumn term in the mainstream class. There he had made many friends and really enjoyed it. Now that he has been moved to the resource base, he misses his friends (although he does join them in the afternoon). Other than that, I feel that it is the right place for my son, in that he gets lots of attention with 2 adults (1 teacher, 1 teaching assistant) looking after 5 children. So my son gets personalised curriculum and reading support every day. Being in the resource base means, I get regular updates about my son's day/week at school which was not possible in the mainstream setting.

If your DS struggles with speech, I would encourage you to apply for the language unit once you get the draft EHCP. Hope this helps. Good luck!

@KeepGoingThomas I will talk to the SENCO if this keeps repeating in the future. Thanks for your comment.
