1:1 support

Hello,

In my child’s EHCP it states he needs individualised support to address his complex needs so that he is able to access the curriculum more effectively. Key staff will need awareness of my child needs in the school environment to support with the difficulties that he may experience settling into classrooms and into other unfamiliar environments.
He requires full-time 1 to 1 support (30 hours weekly) initially to help with the transition into the school setting and additional interventions for coping in the classroom (identified in review meetings with Class Teacher). Review meetings will be held 1⁄2 termly to address continuing identification of need and provision of support. It will be necessary to make adjustments to support levels when identified outcomes are achieved.

The school said my child from September- October was unable to attend school as they were recruiting a staff member to provide the 1:1. Upon having meetings I have now been told a team of 3 staff members who are part of the class will be providing the 1:1.

Despite recruitment having taken place for a staff member I am being told 3 TAs from the class will be providing the 1:1. Funding for my child to receive 1:1 has also been given. My child has ASD so he struggles with changes and would definitely find it hard to cope with getting used to different TAs and would disrupt him.

Could someone please let me know where I stand in this situation and what to do? Do I have the right of having the same person for the 1:1 for my child? And also the school is refusing to provide me with the information of who they have recruited to provide my child with 1:1.

Unless "a single 1:1 adult with X experience" is in the EHCP, then this isn't required. You've done well to get 30 hours stated in the EHCP though.

He would definitely need at least 2 people, as any member of staff needs a break in a six hour day. By having three, there would always be an adult that knows him. If his main person is off sick, one of the other two can step in, and the third can provide breaks for that person.

You don't have rights to make the school to tell you the outcome of their recruitment, though they were wrong to delay him starting. It is very possible that they were unable to recruit and they have had to convince three existing staff. Hopefully that's not the case though.

The reason I have asked school about who the recruited 1:1 is as I have constantly been told it’s taking place to employ a staff member for my son. I have been told the recruited person will be appointed for my son once funding was approved for it. And now I’m being told a team of 3 staff members who work in the class will be providing 1:1 and we would not bring in another person. So therefore why has my child missed education if staff from the school could provide the 1:1? Have the school deliberately prevented my child from attending?

Also the school won’t tell me who the main 1:1 is.
