DD is 9, autistic and academically bright.

I think her time at mainstream school is coming to an end. She has an EHCP.

The SEN schools near us on the Wirral seem to be for children who will not be aiming for GCSEs. Can anyone recommend me any specialist provisions for an academically able girl who just can’t cope well with a traditional school.

Many thanks in advance.

Have a look at West Kirby School.

Church Lawton is worth a look too, some like it, others don’t.

Thank you. I had looked at West Kirby but not at Church Lawton. They both just have depressingly low levels of achievement at GCSE level. I don’t think she’d be a good fit.

Would boarding be suitable? If so, you could look at Alderwasley Hall, which would be doable as weekly boarding.

West Kirby have academically able DC some years because they have previously had pupils go on to university. The difficulty is cohorts vary so much because they are smaller.

If there isn’t a suitable school, have you considered EOTAS?

Thanks, I’ve not heard of Alderwasley Hall so will look into it. Thanks also for the information on West Kirby, I didn’t know they’d had kids go to uni before, so will think again.

I am considering EOTAS, and am looking at online school, but I’d have to do a lot more than I am at present what with supervision, and providing her with social opportunities, PE opportunities etc, and with my work it’s stressful even thinking about it, although as time goes on I’m thinking this may be the best way for her, which is ultimately all that matters.

With EOTAS you can’t be compelled to organise, facilitate or deliver the package. Even if that means the LA has to fund someone to do that. You may have to appeal, but that could be equally said about getting an independent or NMSS named.
