Dd had always been an okish eater but I was hellbent getting more food into her so never trialed a spoon. Seeing in nursery that toddlers younger than her eating with a spoon made me ashamed of myself .so I bought doddle spoons and a couple of others and used her greatest love of yogurt to motivate her to eat. She holds the spoon and I dip it on and then she puts into her mouth but she doesn't look at the bowl and if I don't dip it she will continue to plough spoon into mouth. Did you have these issues and how did you please get your asd toddler to use even a spoon and get their concentration up.
I also tried with wheatabix but still same issue, not looking at bowl ,me dipping .shes 2yrs old precisely, I feel I'm so late 😪

You shouldn’t feel ashamed or that it is too late. Keep persevering. How are DD’s other motor skills?

It is often said DC with ASD are developmentally 2/3rds of their age. So, if DD is only just 2y/o she may be developmentally closer to 1 than 2.

She eats fruit by fingers, she doesn't dress herself she doesn't manipulate play things, she was good at 5 piece puzzles but no longer plays with them, you know the 5 wooden circles, she knew how to put one inside another at 20 months but since is bored of it. I'll buy some play dough and crayons coming shortly, god willing 🙏

Try some activities to develop DD’s fine and gross motor skills.

Has DD had an OT assessment?

Pumpy001 · 29/10/2023 11:51

No she hasn't I will try, thank you Yellowtips.she isn't the most interested in anything I do but ill certainly try

It might be worth a referral to OT, especially if things continue to be a struggle as DD gets older. In some areas you can self refer.

Pumpy001 · 29/10/2023 13:06

How can I self refer please?

If you google your local area and paediatric OT referral you should be able to find out the team who deliver children’s OT and the referral process. In some areas you can self refer, if you can’t in your area your GP or HV will be able to.
