using textbooks instead of powerpoint slides

Hi,

I wondered if anybody might know whether it's feasible for a school to let one child work from text books in one subject, while the others work from powerpoint slides?

My ds has ASD and cPTSD and is finding the powerpoint slides in one subject really difficult to cope with because they are massively overloaded with competing boxes and gifs and videos and whathaveyou, and because the videos often have disturbing content.

I have bought a text book for the same qualification and he is really happy with it, and would like to learn from it, while the other kids learn from the powerpoint slides. However, I think he would need 1-2-1 teaching as he is not independent enough to just push on through all by himself. I think his hope may be unrealistic unless he can get 1-2-1 teaching or move to a different school where everyone is working from text books.

I wondered if anybody might know what the options are?

It's just this one subject where there is a problem. The powerpoint slides used by other subjects are almost always okay.

Thanks!

Unless DS has an EHCP that includes 1:1 teaching it is unlikely the school will be able to facilitate that. However, the school could adapt the PowerPoints they are using to be more accessible. Is the distressing content part of the texts they are studying?

Moving to another school may not solve the difficulties and could create new problems. Many schools don’t use textbooks now, and where they do there’s no guarantee they would teach the same exam boards in the same order or that DS’s option subjects could be facilitated.

Thanks, we are having an EHCP just now so I could ask about a 1:1.

The powerpoint slides are bought in as a job lot and the whole slide deck is eye watering. It's littered with errors and ghastly animations and just neck deep in too much stuff. I don't think they could modify it short of deleting almost every component.

It's really frustrating as DH and I are both research scientists and the science teaching DS is getting is just rubbish, and giving him the heebie jeebies as well.

Slightly wish we could teleport him back to the pre-internet era.

It's science that's the problem, so not to do with texts.

Is it one particular science or all 3? The school could make their own PowerPoints.

You would need to request an early review. Unfortunately, the LA doesn’t have to agree to and if that happens you don’t get the right of appeal you would have to either wait for the AR or request a reassessment of needs (which would have the right of appeal if refused).

Does the EHCP include any therapeutic provision?

The teacher says it's fine for him to bring text books and he can just use them. Massive relief to hear that. I have bought a ton of books, and workbooks and things.
