Dyslexia advice

My 8 year old was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. She’s generally been doing really well at school, whilst struggling in spelling and writing, but has good reading and comprehension skills. We got her assessed based on gut instinct (screening didn’t pick it up) and a wonderfully engaged teacher. Because she’s keeping by up, or exceeding in some areas, I suspect it’s going to be a challenge to get her support.

Can anyone with experience help me understand the scores to work out the severity of the issue she’s got? My partner is severely dyslexic - which is partly why we got her checked early - but she doesn’t present with the same challenges he has (she loves reading).

Secondly, her visual perception score is very low - which the assessor said was also highly likely to be driving the lower score in the matrices assessment. This is the bit I have no idea to how to help her with and feels a fairly significant barrier - could a behavioural optometrist help? Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer. We’ve got a meeting with school - who are great - soon but trying to learn as much as I can myself.

Hi, your daughter has some clear strengths but her phonological awareness, phonological processing and memory (both working and phonological), along with visual perception as you note are weak. Her verbal skills are strong and may well mask the extent of her difficulties so it is great to hear her school are supportive and aware.

Thank you @Catwoman1985 - on the weak areas, I understand they are weaker than average for her age. Have you got any sense of how they would compare to an ‘average’ dyslexic child her age? Just trying to gauge whether this is a ‘mild dyslexia’ or if the scores indicate a more significant challenge
