Hitting other children

My DS8 is in a PRU, having respite from mainstream. Likely high functioning ASD (under CAMHS) and EHCP just been approved.

He presented in mainstream school with severe anxiety and anger and occasionally this manifested itself in hitting teachers, but never other children.

In the PRU he has just started hitting other children when dysregulated. Anecdotally another parent there told me the same is happening with their child, and the staff at the PRU have admitted that hitting is becoming “infectious” there amongst children.

I’m really upset about this (likewise with his behaviour in mainstream), but this feels like another level. I’m cross that it’s happening in a (very) small specialist setting, and that they don’t seem to be doing anything about it. I know what/who one of the protagonists is, but that’s another story.

Can anyone give me any advice as to how to support him? He needs to know he can’t hit, but it’s clearly a reaction to something that’s happening there and I think copycat behaviour as it’s so new. How can I pitch this with the teachers? I’m concerned that this is setting us up for even more challenges than before he went to the PRU.
Thanks

DS’s needs being better met will reduce/stop the hitting. What support is he receiving? OT, including sensory OT, SALT, MH therapies? Does the PRU offer anything like Zones of Regulation? Have they looked at how the classroom could better meet DS’s needs, do they use sensory equipment? Are they keeping a diary to spot triggers and deescalate prior to it reaching the point of DS hitting?
