Hello,
Just wanted some advice from anyone with experience of vision therapy. My 14 year old daughter had a diagnosis of autism and dyslexia. She can experience blurry vision which impact’s particularly reading, art, sports. After trialing glasses which didn’t help her optician referred her to hospital orthoptics. Whilst on the waiting list for the consultant, she was seen by optician in clinic she was given some exercises to do and diagnosed with convergence insufficiency, accommodative insufficiency, esophoria and reduced vision.
They were really basic tracking exercises and after 6 weeks at a check up they then said to continue with same exercises for another 8 weeks.
So we went and saw someone privately who did lots of tests, diagnosed same as above and started retained reflex exercises. There has been some subtle improvement.
so we finally saw the consultant today who after 3 hours (lots of waiting and a few tests) concluded her eyes were fine and the issues are mental health related. Said they would make a referral to CAMHS and discharged us.
I am feeling so confused!! She loves sports, is happiest playing sport yet still cannot see if people are at wrong angle etc. she has no trauma, no bullying. She is happy to go to school, engages with out of school sports. Yes had a lot of support due to her autism so we are careful she does not get overwhelmed so she is doing 7 GCSE’s, attends an independent school where classes are smaller etc. I work in mental health - she does not appear to have mental health issues, other than usual issues a 14 year old girl would have such as some arguments with friends. She did struggle with anxiety before we knew about the autism, but now we understand that and she has support in place.
I guess I am wondering if anyone elses child has vision issues that have been mental health related? The vision therapy is expensive and miles away, we go every 6 weeks. So would I be better off spending money on counselling?
