Hi
I was looking at doing a quick survey, because after three years of fighting for my daughter who has had ADHD ODD, social anxiety and non-attendance to school.
I feel with all the knowledge that I have experienced throughout my challenge with the school GPs CAMHS, SENDIASS inclusion board complaints to the school.
I wanted to pass my knowledge on to order struggling parents out there.
I have no help or directions to follow, and if something was there to help me, I would’ve got where I am and I am now a lot quicker.
My daughter wouldn’t have missed so much of an education.
I’m looking at starting a charity to help others with free advise.

I would like to know if any parents out there would think that this would be beneficial to them?

Why not volunteer for one of the many charities who already support parents of DC with SEN? Has to be easier than setting one up.

My my experience isn’t just about sen.
I’ve had navigate GPs paediatricians inclusion boards, school complaint processes. Equality act.
Just general day-to-day advise on where to start off.
really important that at low-level you record everything about your child I’m just having a written record will help no end.
Just feel maybe if I knew somebody was out there like me going through the same thing I would’ve been able to contact them .
I’ve been in touch with ADHD solutions and lots of other charities.

I would like to be the first responder with a real story to tell I’m late to.

if there are other charities out there a similar, please let me know.

Thank you for your reply

Yes, there’s charities that support parents of disabled children/children with SEN. Some support with specific issues, others support parents generally. For example: IPSEA, SOSSEN, Contact, Cerebra, Scope, NFIS, Support SEND Kids, SENTAS, Parents in Need… The Council for Disabled Children also has lots of helpful information and resources. At a local level there are parent career forums and SENDIASS - although the quality of the advice and usefulness varies depending on where you live, some are helpful, others repeat the LA’s unlawful policies.

The things you list are about SEN/disability.

may be worth a look but no one informs you on where to start.
like me it’s taken me years to learn the system and still learning.
I never found a one stop first hand advice to help me eat the start.
even when researching myself it’s hard to find out which way to go.

just thought a little advice might help someone speed up the process.

even if you can hit start them with the right services 👍

The other point is that all the services and acronyms don’t really relate to that average parent.
I didn’t understand where to go once my daughter was diagnosed.
I don’t find the name of the charity is very helpful.

Just my opinion, really thank you for the feedback

Many charities will inform you where to start when you contact them. Several even have model letters for you to use.

The problem is parents knowing to contact them in the first place. Another charity will just be the same problem. How will people know to contact you in the first place and how are you going to overcome the barrier all the others currently have?

OvertakenByLego · 24/09/2023 19:25

Well I only used the acronyms because surely if you are going to set up a charity to support parents you know all the ones I used as they are all commonplace when supporting parents with disabled DC/DC with SEN.

Mumslikeme · 24/09/2023 19:29

Like I said before it’s not just about SEN.
safeguarding and wellbeing is just as important.
I have experience with behavioural courses, sexually exploitation.
Self harm
Anxiety

just wanted to pass my experience on and not show off how many services I can real off.
most of them have not delivered anything for me so far!!!

life experience is the best experience to past in to parents who feel the same way.

emotional support is what I’m offering 👍

Hmm You were the one who posted “if there are other charities out there a similar, please let me know.” Which is why I posted them. If you have approached them it is surprising you haven’t received support from most of them.

Much of what you list (behavioural courses, anxiety, self harm) come under SEN/disabilities. Many of the charities/services I listed (and others) also support parents with safeguarding issues, wellbeing and CSE.

Mumslikeme · 24/09/2023 20:09

That was my point, never been referred to some of the charity’s you have suggested.

in my experience I think I was scared to contact them. Having to admit what you are going through.

the first response can help you understand who they are and what help you can get.

google can’t explain the real life processes.

I appreciate your feedback and look forward to researching your suggestions and charity bodies.

maybe I can start volunteering for them 😊

That was my point, never been referred to some of the charity’s you have suggested.

That was my point in my post at 19.23. The problem is parents knowing who to contact in the first place rather than there not being the charities out there supporting parents already. Another charity will have the same problem. Which is why I asked how you will overcome the barrier other charities have.

There is also the fact many of the volunteers at the established charities have access to expert legal advice for the more complex cases.

You asked for advice. I gave it based on my experience of supporting thousands of parents over many years to navigate the system, but I will leave you to it as you clearly only wanted replies saying how wonderful it is.
