You will be sent a draft, you will be able to make representations and state your preferred school. Before the EHCP is finalised the school will also be consulted.

Hi, I am really looking for help! My son needs ehcp at school, agreed by me the school head teacher and his consultant. My son has epilepsy which has caused a global development delay and lots of other issues which are being investigated. He is being assessed at the start of December which I am paying for privately. He is struggling immensely at school and I spoke to the head teacher today and she had told me applications for ehcp are not being advised to be submitted or being accepted because there is no funding?

what do I do, where can I go from here?? I can’t Just stop at this, he needs help at school, more than they can give him, even if I wait six months after it being accepted it will take another 20 weeks, he is year 1 now and is still struggling with reception eyfs.

what can I do, is there a private body beyond the local authority that can help? Can I pay for help privately, he is on main stream school. These early years are so pivotal and he struggles with school environment as it is, I don’t see how he is going to love forward and thrive in school without this help, which could take a year plus realistically I’m guessing. I know there are situation in worse counties but just asking for advice and help for me and my son. Thanks so much, hannah x

@Hhaigh this is an old thread, you would be better starting your own thread.

The school is fobbing you off. Request an EHCNA yourself. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

In the meantime, the school must make their best endeavours to meet DS’s SEN. If they need more funding, they can apply for high needs top up funding. What support is the school currently providing?

Some special schools accept parents funding the placement, but this can be very, very expensive. Therapies can be funded privately, if that’s what you mean. But, the main thing is to request an EHCNA yourself ASAP.

I have my assessment booked for 4th December, and based on the questionnaire filled out by school the doctor doing the assessment has already asked why an ehcp isn’t in place already! I am really puzzled as to why the school have said the la is advising to hold off on submissions due to finding issues, I really can’t get my head around this…I just can’t accept it. It’s clear he needs help and he isn’t getting it. He is doing split time between reception and year 1 (currently year 1) and whole in reception he is having 1-1 short bursts of catch up learning for basics , phonics and numbers etc, then in y1 there is a ta to help him but is spread across other children. I really don’t feel the school are being pro active and previously the school have been fantastic and I am very worried. I have requested another meeting to discuss my concerns. Im
worried he is constantly going to be behind and struggling with the school environment, I just really don’t know what to do

LAs and some schools often try to put parents off. Just request an EHCNA yourself.

@Hhaigh you can get the go to sign him off school and do some homeschooling while you gather the reports and evidence you need to submit for the ehcp.
I had my daughter signed off and sent the la a completed form, list of documents with dates, attached all the documents, also a list of professionals involved and all contact details. It’s then sis weeks when they decide to assess and a further 14 at the very least to get an ehcp. You may have to go through appeal processes. It’s gruelling and unfair. If you can get some legal help to lessen the load.

Relaxinghammock · 15/11/2023 22:16

Hhaigh you don’t need to wait for further assessments before requesting an EHCNA.

You don’t need to homeschool. If CSA pupils can’t attend school full time the LA has a statutory duty to ensure DC receive a suitable, full-time education under s19 of the Education Act 1996.

Is the ehnca the assessment? I have that booked privately start of December. What happens after the assessment does the doctor make recommendations and referrals? Thank you, hannah x

i want to avoid taking him out of school unless I decided to home school for definite as I know the change would really affect him. I’ve requested a meeting with head teacher Friday, so will see, are there children worse off than him yes, but he has significant needs and health issues, does he need extra help to learn like other children yes, I find it discriminating how the process is.

Relaxinghammock · 16/11/2023 08:38

The EHCNA is the needs assessment you first request from the LA as part of the EHCNA process. This isn’t what you have booked privately. It is via the LA. IPSEA and SOSSEN’s websites have lots of information to read to learn more about EHCPs and the process.

What will happen after the assessment you have booked privately depends on what the assessment you have booked is for and who you have booked it with. Some will make recommendations and onwards referrals, some won’t.

My daughter is in year 11 and has struggled throughout secondary school, this is her 4th secondary school now. Her mocks have come back where she’s failed almost everything, but school have said she’s ‘doing well? What? Did I miss something? Her anxiety is so high in this environment, she spends some of everyday sitting in inclusion to get away from classes, as everything about it, triggers her mental health. She’s been on the waitlist for CAMHS for 18 months, and although she’s self harming with suicidal thoughts, still no one is doing anything. CAMHS initial assessment says she’s likely got PTSD. I’ve questioned to school how is inclusion helping her academically, and why is this the only solution to her anxiety? She just gets excluded. I’ve asked the school to start a EHC, and they’ve refused, saying there is enough SEN provision provided to help her. Hmmmm, my child hates school and her attendance is at 72%. I’ve been told she ‘can’ get to school so everything is fine! I’ve had to raise the EHC myself now but the school have said they won’t say it’s needed and don’t agree a EHCP placement at a specialist school is needed and probably won’t be given. Can they do this? I’m looking at my unhappy stressed child that’s not thriving academically or emotionally in mainstream education and I’m trying to get her help. If the school refuse to play ball, can this put a spanner in the works? Will they ruin her chances? Any advise will help.
