Anyone have any experience of end of year trophies/awards for children with SEN?

I'm doing some work at a school which held their awards ceremony today.
It's an academic independent boys school with a focus on sports but there are some boys with various SEN such as dyslexia, ADHD etc that seem to be well supported, but not recognised when it comes to awards.

It got me to thinking about whether any schools give awards for other things. Effort is an obvious one but I'm fairly certain (at this school) it would go to an already achieving pupil rather than one who may not have made much progress but most certainly put in a lot of effort.
I spotted a couple of boys that looked so disappointed and dejected, it just broke my heart...

Anyone had experience of schools doing something for the SEN children? Who would suggest this? What's the protocol? Would a parent/business sponsor it?
I noticed that there were a few prizes here like the John Roberts Trophy for best whatever... could I offer The HurrahWuff shield for *insert (I dunno what which is why I'm asking you?)

No it always goes to the same people each year.... doesn't ever get mixed up (independent mainstream) so if you got an award last year you can almost guarantee you will get an award this year.

To be fair our school the sport award does go to an Adhd / sen boy but he's on stimulant meds so I always wonder if that helps him at cross country etc .... but he's great at sport

Suppose they don't want to highlight the sen children but yes they put in more effort than any of the NT children - remember the word "resilient " arrrrrhhhhhhh the kids will sen win the gold trophy for that! But unfortunately they never get a mention 😭 when they have tried soooooo hard all year 😭

Suppose the "joys" of schools and prize days! No wonder sen kids hate it

DD got a deputy headteachers' award for coming up with the idea, with friends, of a Friendship Bench where anyone can sit at breaktime if they want a chat.

I was v proud. She's totally middling academically.

Agreed. It seems a bit mad that we're not celebrating these little ND humans in educational establishments what with the way our world is changing. Especially when it's fairly clear that most (all?) major inventors and innovators, scientists and geniuses to date are pretty obviously ND.

Maybe schools don't want to give awards for fear of highlighting 'disabilities' but if they were celebrated there wouldn't be the shame attached in the first place. Sigh.

DD's school had a Governors Prize for 'Overcoming adversity' or some such.

So that could go to someone with ND or SEN, or Physical difficulties, or adverse family circumstances etc.

The trouble with all these prizes is it can make the ones who don't get it feel even more not noticed.

The SEN children at our mainstream school are always very well represented at prize giving. Some of them are very academic though and come near or at the top of the year in exams. I think a lot of other parents don’t realise they are SEN children because they think all SEN children are low ability.

Same dc always win the school prizes, basically the top academic performers and all rounders. Bit pointless really!
Boys 4-13 independent day school
my ds has ASD & dyslexia, one other with dyslexia in class of 19. Neither have won a prize since reception (yr7 now) . There is one child with ASD in a lower year who wins maths prizes…he is some sort of maths genius though (think done a levels age 8 type stuff)
