Why would a school (Sen specialist) decide to carry out and IRA on a pupil?

My son has one and it's to reduce the risk to himself, staff and other children of injury because he tries to escape and has behavioural and emotional problems. It outlines what strategies the school have put in place to prevent each risk. So my ds is high risk for escaping and the risk is lowered by them making sure all gates are locked and only one entrance to the school in the morning, all staff must be aware he is a flight risk etc= risk lowered. Prior to strategies: high risk.

Can be done for lots of things though.

It is good practice for a SEN specialist school to do this where a significant number of pupils may have challenging behaviour and / or medical problems. Certainly, ds1's old school did one for all pupils automatically on entry to the school. It focuses mainly on the prevention of incidents by identifying triggers, informing staff of non-verbal signs of distress and tells them the best strategies to use to de-escalate situations. it is individual because even if all the children have the same or similar diagnosis e.g. ASC the triggers and de-escalation techniques are very likely to differ.
