Any SALT specialists around? or parents of children with SALT provision?

My DD 's SALT report states she has difficulty with blank level 3 & 4. There is currently no provision in school for SALT as she is "highly articulate". My question is what could be put in place? She is yr9 and about to start GCSEs and I think this is a significant stumbling block to her achieving her potential. She is predicted 8/9s at gcse - yet cannot answer most of the higher level questions for eg English / RE / History where level 3&4 skills are needed.

Does DD have an EHCP? If so, SALT can be included in F so it must be provided. You can request an early review to try to get it included in there, via appeal if necessary. If she doesn’t have an EHCP you should consider requesting an EHCNA.

The SALT report should make recommendations on support. An EP assessment would also help. As well as direct SALT therapy, things such as assistive technology and software may help, teachers breaking instructions down/providing written instructions, pre-teaching new vocab.

Thank you. No ehcp. The SALT report was part of an assessment so no provision suggested and have been told by the assessor that she would not meet threshold for intervention. We are considering applying for an ehcp which is why I am wondering what is available. When I discuss with professionals they seem to think that the difficulties she has don't need support as she is doing fine.

Even when it is part of an assessment any good SALT would include provision as well as needs. Sadly many LA and NHS assessments are poor quality.

With an EHCP direct SALT can be included even when DC wouldn’t ordinarily meet the threshold for NHS care. It could also include 1:1 to support subjects with heavier language content.

Being academically able doesn’t mean DD doesn’t need SEN support. I have 2 DC with EHCPs, both academically able.

Thank you. This is why I am contemplating an ehcna - because I know 1-1 support would make a massive difference in core literacy based subjects. She needs a completely different way of teaching to the standard classroom environment and this is the only way to get that. Just need to figure out how to get there!
