After a private diagnosis last year for DS (15), we have just received our long-awaited NHS appointment. Any thoughts please on whether it's worth going ahead with the NHS diagnosis having already had a private assessment?
Private diagnosis was positive for inattentive ADHD but DS does not wish to take medication at this point.
My worries are twofold:
-
if he doesn't have an NHS diagnosis and later in life wants to take medication and the private consultant is no longer able to prescribe, does that leave him back at square 1?
-
But what if the NHS diagnosis says he doesn't have it? If he did have a private prescription would the NHS then refuse to take it over after 6 months because of a negative NHS diagnosis? The forms that DS's teacher filled in sounded as though they were for a different child (eg no problems concentrating, when every single teacher he has ever had said he cannot concentrate). The private assessment involved a QB test which sealed the positive diagnosis, but I don't think that will be offered on NHS.
Any thoughts gratefully received!
