We had our first meeting with DS teacher today. She said he has problems with repetitive play and speech and does not seem able to relate to the other kids, he finds it difficult to focus on things he is not interested in. He is now going to be referred to an Ed Psych. Can anyone tell me where things go from here. Obviously she is going to assess him and will probably want to talk to us as well. What happens after that? Is it usual that she will assess him by herself without me or DH there? Should I take him to my GP as well and ask for a referral from him also? The school do seem very proactive but I dont want this to just be 'happening' to us IYSWIM. I want to be fully involved every step of the way and I need to know how it is all done to be able to do that. I have also posted this in SEN. I would be really grateful for any thoughts or information. Thank you.

I was mostly with my DS when he was assessed by the Ed Psych at home, but not in school. The GP can do a CHAT test and maybe refer you on to a paediatrician if s/he thinks there are issues. The Ed Psych will write a report and then your DS may or may not get extra help in school, or be referred for further assessment for a Statement (though that's unlikely, see other threads re LEAs trying all sorts of ways of giving out fewer statements!). Extra help in school could be a good thing maybe?. Sorry I can't be more help, as it is ironic that I'm on the other side of the coin, where I had to drag the LEA kicking and screaming into assessing my DS for a statement! You can't win!
