To go for an EHCP or not?

My DS, year 4, diagnosed ASD and dyslexia and it has been suggested potential inattentive ADHD.

Currently in a mainstream primary. They have offered to apply for an EHCP but they say he is "borderline". I agree. Personally I think he would benefit from being in a smaller environment with the existing level of support he receives.

We are looking at secondary schools. I am trying to figure out if he would be better off in a local mainstream secondary with an EHCP, or a nurturing independent secondary without an EHCP.

Also lots of the independent schools don't seem too keen on kids with EHCPs and I'm a bit worried that pursuing one would jeopardise his chances in getting an independent school place.

I would really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

If the school are suggesting apply I would definitely apply, especially if you are questioning whether he will cope in a state secondary MS

Many independent schools aren’t supportive of SEN, EHCP or not EHCP, and often charge extra when they are. You may find those independent schools you think aren’t keen on pupils with EHCP aren’t keen on them because of the level of their needs, not the EHCP itself, so if DS’s needs are at that level then they may not be supportive even if he don’t have an EHCP.

An EHCP can fund an independent mainstream.

Thank you. The trouble is that I don't really think his baseline needs require an EHCP. I think the only reason that they do is because of the large class sizes in state schools affecting him both socially and academically. I think that an independent school with appropriate support such as he receives at the moment without an EHCP would be best, but until we try it, we won't know!

What support does he currently have? My DD is currently borderline at primary ( partly because the school are supporting her so well), but is very unlikely to manage in even a small secondary without more support.

If DS can’t cope in an ordinary state classroom academically or socially because of his SEN that does indicate an EHCP is necessary.

Schools don’t suggest an EHCP unless one is needed.
