DC6 cannot read or write yet. School brush aside concerns and say at school she can read. We don't see this at home. DC is headstrong and refuses to do any homework at home (please don't judge, we cannot push as sibling has additional needs and DC already is affected by issues arising out of that at home, so dynamics are different at home). What concerns us that she still cannot recognise easy words that would repeatedly come up on same page (say a book about a dog, and the word dog is repeatedly on the page, but every time DC needs to sound it out and gets it wrong), for example reads "no" as "on", writes letters and numbers in reverse. We don't know if it is combo of bad school and her and her circumstances at home, but we don't want to rule out dyslexia. Many places come up on Google, but tried and tested places would be much appreciated.

Rather than a specific dyslexia assessment, it sounds like a full Ed psych assessment would be a better idea. If you do go down the EP route try Vivienne Clifford, Jemma Levy, Ruth Birnbaum.

I may be way off the mark here, but you mention refusing to do homework and a sibling with additional needs, is there a possibility DD is ND?

If you think DD needs more support in school have you considered applying for an EHCNA.

Thanks so much - DC's sibling has ASD - his traits and everything he presented and presents plus other issues (low muscle tone/speech delay/hypermobility/etc - some of which have been "resolved" or overcome with time) are nothing like hers. She has hit every milestone except for reading/writing. Reception was also hit with Covid lockdown so she lost that year but so did other kids in her class and they have caught up. If she has ASD traits (and I know girls mask), we are not picking up on it. She is difficult to handle and headstrong, and we cannot force her to do anything - almost PDA traits but is not always- and we don't unless it is very important but we wonder being in her brother's shadow has made her like that. OR we have been shit parents - we flip flop between all theories.

You are right perhaps Ed psych report may be another route to consider. I will check out the recommendations as well. Thanks so much.

I am not sure she is at the level EHCP will be awarded. I think we need to understand her.

If DD has a sibling with ASD I would serious considering seeking an assessment for ASD or other ND condition. She is more likely to be ND herself with a ND sibling. It isn’t uncommon for girls to present differently and there are a few things in your posts that could indicate ASD.
