and how does it compare to what they get?

if your child has one to one, would you expect the TA to have some kind of sn/sen training?

is there somewhere I can read up on this/research it?

I do think that the pay for even highly qualified TAs is a joke. They are expected to do so much more than when I first started teaching 20 years ago.

We have a very experienced and qualified HLTA working in our Unit for Hearing Impaired. She works very closely with us and takes on a certain amount of 1-1 teaching within the groups we have and also works very closely with class teachers to ensure that the kids she supports are accessing the lesson.
She is only paid as an HLTA if she actually teaches the whole group/ lesson when perhaps the we (the ToDs) are ill or on a course.

Her extra pay?

60p an hour more.

Outrageous!

Having said that TAs who work with SN kids must be properly trained to support children effectively. Without this they can do more harm than good.

I am extremely lucky - the support my dd2 gets in her m/s primary school is perfect. I really couldn't ask for anything better.
The LEA funds 100% of 1-1 TA, and she has an absolutely fab TA who really is perfect and knows dd2 so well - she doesn't let dd2 get away with anything and she's intelligent and kind as well as being a single mum of 4 so knows children rather well.
Her usual TA works 4 days a week, so dd2 has a different TA on Mondays - this works out really well too and she isn't dependent on one particular person.
Dd2's TA hasn't got any specific SN training, although she has done a few courses over the past few years and she picked up Makaton on her own very quickly just by using a book, but in our case that's ok - dd2 is easy-going and very textbook really.
