Private Dyslexia Tutor - Attending school during school hours. Help with costs?

My 8 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with Dyslexia. One of the recommendations within her report was to hire a specialist Dyslexia tutor.

Her school have recommended one that attends the school during school hours. She currently supports two other children. I have spoken to this tutor and she is able to help my daughter but it isn't cheap. I'm looking at around £200 per month.

Obviously I want to do the best for my daughter but we are going to struggle to find £200 per month for this private tutoring. Is there any sort of help I can get with this?

Does DD have an EHCP?

Hi, no she doesn’t. She only has Dyslexia and has only just recently been diagnosed with it privately. Could I get one of those?

You could try, you have nothing to lose. Without an EHCP you won’t get funding for the tutoring. Is the a state or independent school?

Thanks. I will into applying for one. Do I need the headteacher’s support for this? My daughter attends a state school. It is small though so they don’t have a huge budget.

You don’t need the school to agree to applying for an EHCNA you can do it yourself. IPSEA have a model letter you can use.

What support are the school providing? The school must make their best endeavours to meet DD’s SEN.

Not a great deal to be honest. Intervention with a teaching assistant a few times a week to help with phonics etc. It is a small rural school, I don’t think they get much funding.

If they need more funding they can apply for high needs top up funding. Does DD use any assistive technology?

@Awcw1234 how did you arrange a private diagnosis? And how cooperative were the school?

My DS has dyslexia and the school have been very reluctant to refer to the local dyslexia service. He doesn't have a diagnosis but I'm a highly specialist SLT with 15 + years of SEN experiences. He has a very dyslexic brain but his reading and writing doesn't score significantly enough to be accepted by our local dyslexia service. I'm really worried that as he moves through school and things get increasingly more difficult for him it will impact his confidence and self esteem. Our only option seems to go down the private route.

Would you be able to advise on the process you took? Thanks
