What are the genetic tests for?

Hi

My DD is in the process of being assessed for ASD and has had the initial assessment and been referred on. As part of this she's been invited to have a blood test for genetic tests.

For some reason this has made me feel really panicky and wondering if we're doing the right thing. Communication has been pretty bad all the way asking and I'm sure the paed didn't tell us why these tests are needed or even what they are testing for. Obviously I can't reach anyone at the paediatric unit to ask about it.

Can anyone here enlighten me? It's possible I'm being paranoid and ridiculous but I feel very weird about her genetic records being obtained, stored, and shared. I don't think I'm being 100% rational and I think more info would help.

Thank in advance

My DN had genetic testing as part of his early ASD diagnosis and a hereditary genetic abnormality causing ASD was identified, this encouraged his older DS to obtain an ASD diagnosis - which has been really helpful for her.

Is it an array CGH? If so, it is looking at chromosomes. Sometimes there are conditions that present similarly or are linked to ASD.
