DD diagnosed with dyslexia and possibly ADHD but a high IQ

My DD (aged 8 year 4) had a full assessment today (private) and the assessor ran through some info at the end but I will have to wait for the full report.

She said she does have dyslexia (we went for the assessment as she struggles with reading and just literally cannot spell at all) and that she shows as likely having ADHD. This bit kind of blindsided me but I do see what she's saying to some extent when I think about it.

She then said she does however have a very high IQ, particularly the visual part. She even mentioned Mensa and I was very 🧐. I was not expecting this at all, but I now feel I am going to have to really push with school and extra support at home as she obviously has a high potential.

does anyone have experience of this with their children? I obviously want to do whatever I can to make sure that the challenges (that's what we call them) don't hold her back because obviously most tests (sats etc) involve a lot of reading which she is slow at and writing when she can't spell.

I was advised to get the toe2toe book so will do this at home. Will the report specify what her school needs to put in place?

Also- do I need to look into an ECHP ? Or not? This is all new to me.

The report should include recommendations, but depending on what they are they may not be reasonable to expect the school to put in place without additional funding. The school should make their best endeavours to meet a pupil’s SEN, but if the report e.g. suggests 1:1 that isn’t reasonable without additional funding. Have you spoken to the SENCO?

If you think DC needs more support than the school can/will provide you can apply for an EHCNA. IPSEA have a model letter you can use. The threshold for an EHCNA is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need SEN provision to be made via an EHCP.

Look into 2e (twice exceptional).
