Dyslexia guidance

Does anyone have any sites or guidance regarding what the school/LA legally need to do to support a child with dyslexia at primary level?

We have a private report - I have been told it is a legal requirement for the school/LA to implement this support.

However, the school/LA seem to have other ideas.

Have a look at IPSEA and SOSSEN, and read the SENCOP. They aren’t dyslexia specific but they are specific to SEN in schools.

Schools have a duty to use their best endeavours to meet children's needs. That does not mean a legal duty to implement what is in your report, however. Nevertheless, it's a good starting point if the person providing the report is a reputable specialist. It's probably worth arranging a meeting with them with the object of talking it through.

I've had the report for over two years and only one teacher has implemented any suggestions. SENCO doesn't have a copy and I've had to supply another.

Report from specialist recommends use of scribe/word processor and extra time for exams.

SENCO is saying DD will never get these in place for SATS or GCSE's because her reading speed is too quick .... this is despite making barely any progress in reading age in the last two years which the school won't discuss with me.

Her reading speed is good because we did toe by toe. But her comprehension is weak.

They also claim the local authority don't recognise dyslexia - though the LA website specifically mentions this. It's all very frustrating.

She has auditory processing disorder and was getting told off for not paying attention because her new teacher hadn't been given her report so had no idea.

You can read the rules for access arrangements for KS2 SATS here and GCSEs here.

Many LAs do try to say they don’t recognise dyslexia, but that is unlawful.
