DD is 11 next month and will be heading to secondary next year. She has a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD (she is not medicated as he’s not deemed severe enough for medication).

She has been assessed by SALT as having a minor speech impediment which needs no further input. The therapist did raise concerns about her lack of ability to focus or remain still and wondered how this affects her at school.

Her GP raised concerns about her lack of ability to focus and remain still and explained it is likely to affect her at school.

She has an appointment with OT this week for support with her lack of organisation skills and to support with functional skills as she gets too distracted to be able to complete them in time. She also has significant sensory sensitivities so seeks input frequently.

She takes medication for sleep and is awaiting assessment from CAMHS for help with low level anxiety.

In spite of the above, she is achieving at school, has a small group of friends and is generally manageable.

Outside of school, she does dance classes but does not have friends and does not know how to approach other children or adults. She has worries about moving to secondary school, can not tolerate loud noises and can not articulate when she’s upset (she shuts down rather than has outward meltdowns).

There have been rare occasions where she has been too poorly to attend school but then has been completely well after she realises she won’t be attending.

I’m concerned about the move to secondary school and how this will impact her both socially and emotionally. Should I apply for a needs assessment? Her school disagree.

If so , how do I prove part B of the legal threshold for assessment?

Any EHCNA now should take into account the upcoming transition, but in reality if DD is managing at the moment you are likely to need to appeal.

The SALT assessment is probably lacking, DC with ASD would benefit from ongoing SALT input. You can use the SALT, GP and OT notes and reports as evidence as well as the CAMHS referral. This IPSEA booklet gives more information on how to prove DD meets the legal threshold.

If you do apply, are refused and go on to appeal you will probably need independent assessments.
