I am hoping to get some advice for a friend who is finding it impossible to get her daughter (just turned 18) onto the appropriate course to progress her qualifications.

DD has only got entry level 2 in English and entry level 3 in Maths. She needs to obtain functional skills level 1 in both subjects. She is lazy as hell with online learning, local adult learning have said the adult learning is from age 19 so we don’t have a clue how she can achieve this. She needs 1 to 1 teaching and she still has her EHCP.

If any of you have any advice it would be very gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Is DD attending a school/college? And is it mainstream or specialist?

18 year olds are still funded under the 16-19 funding regulations. But even after that those with EHCPs continue to be funded in the same way as 16-19 year olds. So, this won’t be a funding issue for the qualification itself.

The provision needs specifying and quantifying in section F of the EHCP. This is especially important if she needs 1:1 teaching.

As an aside, it may not be laziness with online learning, many with SEN struggle with online learning.

She can’t go back to college full time as there is no course she can get on without maths and English. She has progressed as far as she can with childcare. Level 3 is her next.

She should be able to just go to college for English and maths. Is there a special school or college locally? They might offer it with things like life skills to fill her timetable. She could also do other level 2 quals at a college to fill her timetable, what about health and social care? Would fit nicely with childcare.

What placement is named in the EHCP? Is it mainstream or specialist? When was the last AR and what was discussed?

Even if she can’t do a level 3 childcare qualification she can do another course whilst studying for Entry level 3 English and level 1 FS maths. She would likely struggle on a level 3 course with Entry Level 2 English.

What provision relating to maths and English is specified and quantified in section F of the EHCP? The LA have duty to provide what is in the EHCP.

ds2, also with an EHCP, has just started attending a small local training provider (actually I think they are one of a larger group) to get functional skills English so there are places that can do this (up to 25 if you have an EHCP). It is very small group - maybe four students in a class. He is also doing some sort or work skill course alongside this. Google NACRO or I think another one is called Jupiter Training but there seem to be several organisations that do stuff like this.
