Starting reception can't express feelings

Starting reception next week and he can say sentences to describe what he wants such as if he wants a drink or a wee etc but if u ask him how his day was, nothing. If he's Upset he doesn't say why he just cries

How soon roughly will it take him to go from expressing his wants and needs (done) to talking socially and about his emotions

TIA

My son started reception at a mainstream school, but as part of the Speech and language resource there for the Borough, he has an EHCP. The best I got out of him in his first term, he was nearly 4.5 was when I asked 'what have you done today?' He would reply 'running'.

He has progressed a huge amount now, he's just gone into year 2 but the answer to your question is probably 'how long is a piece of string'.

Asking for a timetable of his week so you know what he's done that day may be useful. Then you could talk specifically about PE etc and you know he's done it that day. This helped as when my son started telling me things, which on their own made no sense, if I had a better ideas of what his schedule was like I could try and work it out. His school used twitter as well to keep parents updated about activities and photos, even looking at the other reception classes too so try and put the pieces together at what he had been doing. Would the school be willing to do a home/school diary? They may not if it'll be time consuming.

Working on what is upsetting him is a separate task, perhaps using PECS, or other images which he could use instead of verbal communication.

It’s impossible to say, all DC progress differently. Is DS receiving SALT and OT support? And any other support at school? Does he have an EHCP?

The SEN boards are quieter than some other boards, you just have to be patient for replies, especially at this time of year with DC going back to school.
