Calming activities for autistic 5 year old

Hi

DS (5) has recently been diagnosed with autism, and also has dyspraxia. We've had lots of activities suggested to us by an OT, both heavy work activities and more calming ones. However we're struggling to find something that sticks.

The pressure points in the day are after breakfast/getting ready for the day, and then the bedtime routine. We're wanting to find something that DS will sit and do, with us if appropriate, to calm him down ahead of these points in the day. But he'll rarely co-operate in doing anything we suggest, and if he does, it only lasts a very short while before he's bored. I thought audio books were the answer last week, but now he's fed up of them and won't entertain the idea.

We're also struggling to know how to calm DS down when he's dysregulated and a meltdown is brewing (there have been lots of meltdowns lately!).

If anyone has any ideas or tips for these areas I would appreciate it so much. Now that we've got the diagnosis, it feels like we're on our own in figuring out how to actually cope with it.
