Can there be a false negative on a dyslexia test?

My DD is about to start secondary school, throughout primary we have had some issues with reading, written maths questions, writing speeds and has visual stress ( which she has coloured glasses for. ) .
She still struggles to read blocks of text, would never choose to read a book without pictures to break up the text ( she’d rather not read at all if she has a choice) . She has two siblings, both with a late diagnosis at college & Uni with dyslexia and I suspect my DH has undiagnosed dyslexia.

With tutor support she ( just) achieved expected level in sats despite not completing any of the papers as she ran out of time.
She gets very upset as she sees how much harder it is for her than her friends.

However we had her privately assessed at age 7 and the test results didn’t indicate dyslexia.

So I just wondered if anyone has any experience of a dyslexia diagnosis being missed because they were too young at their initial assessment?

I don’t want to put her through more testing unnecessarily and another knock to her confidence but I hate seeing her struggle and not sure how to get her the right support at secondary school 😞

Did you get a copy of the results? My DD passed the screening for dyslexia in Year 3 but was then diagnosed in Year 6. It was not a full diagnostic exam, as it was done in school so the tests were different, but she scored quite poorly on various measures and poorly enough on one measure to warrant extra exam time. In between these two tests, she was also assessed for visual problems and found that she had a problem with tracking, which we corrected with vision therapy.

I personally would go for another test if you can but I wonder if there are different tests available? I can understand your concerns but maybe you could approach it as something that needs to be reviewed occasionally rather than another one off. If it were positive for dyslexia this time, then she would have to be checked again before GCSEs so it’s not a fabrication.

best of luck

Was it a full diagnostic assessment? Or a screening test?

How does she describe reading with her glasses? When were her colours last done? Colorimetry, Irlens or Equilens?
