Hi. Just wondered if anyones children WITH ASD. Went on to develop good speech even with no words or little understanding at 2.5. We have everyone involved portage SALT pead. But just wanted to hear from some parents on their own experience. I know i there are other ways of communication and we work on them all but part of me feels the more time goes on the less likely speech good speech becomes. Anyones children start speaking after 3? (Having no words at all at 2.5) - he does babble and lots of different variety of sounds baba dada gaga aaa eee raaa brrrr just no real words or imitations (he is on the pathway and we know an ASD diagnosis is coming so ideally ASD experiences) thanks so much for any replies in advance x

Hi. My son ASD and GDD didn’t have any words or any understanding at 2.5, he didn’t even babble just grunted, he said is first word at 3.5 after a massive regression at 18 months, and has progressed since, his understanding is now far greater than his speech, he’s still very delayed but he can tell us what he wants.

DD didn't really have speech until she was 3 but she did have understanding.

Glad that you're getting some support from SLT and Portage Flowers

Ds (7) has ASD.

Almost no speech at 18m not even babbling . Could say mam. Da and nak (snack) we started with salt and saw paediatrician and ds went on pathway. Very slow increase over next couple of years but would only really talk to immediate family. He also started doing echolalia. Then at around 6 he started talking more. He now has full speech but it's still different to other kids. There's still lots of echolalia and he will often agree to things as he knows it's the right answer rather than actually understanding the question. So for example ds could fall and scrap a knee and i could say "are you ok?" He will probably say "yes" as he knows it's a suitable answer to the question. He will talk for hours about his special interest and has no concept that this may not be interesting to others. He struggles with concentration if needing ti listen and needs things breaking down . But he absolutely can talk and relay need/expectation.
