Am all a swivet. My 4 yo starts in mainstream nursery at the local school. She has severe cerebral palsy and visual impairment and can't speak. Is in a wheelchair.
I figured it would be more stimulating as the SN school is 6 kids, all non-verbal and non-mobile strapped into chairs waiting for adults to do stuff. Like a morgue.
But now my fight has ended and she is going I am fretting I've done the wong thing and the other kids will stare or callher names.

Hi NMC
Wising your dd all the best, I hope she loves her new school.
I'm sure there will be questions & stares at first because young children are honest & open but once their questions are answered I'm sure they will go through school with your dd being just one of the gang.

Agree with mymatemax- I too have sent my DS to mainstream and am still very nervous about it. But my theory is that if he can cope in there, I should at least give it a try? I still have my heart in my mouth every time he goes in, but when he's had a good day I am so happy it is ridiculous! Good luck today! The kids at my son's nursery seem to be more accepting than I'd hoped, as do the other mums actually.

went in with her and spent the morning. She coped pretty well but we need to iron out a few things. At story time they had her too far to see the book (she can only see about 2 feet) and while her SN chair had arrived, its headrest and harness hadn't (sigh).
The TA was very nervous about handling dd as she's never done it before (does anyone ever get a TA trained in cerebral palsy or whatever?).

Did she enjoy it nmc?

needmorecoffee · 21/01/2008 13:34

she was smiling and had 12 kids around her showing her things.
Her 'Little Princess Syndrome' is now well established
The boys all wanted to get into her wheelchair and the girls were trying to get her to speak (dd can't speak)

That great NMC Sounds like she was in her element. Hopefully the school will get the other stuff sorted out quickly.

Kids can be a lot nicer and more accepting than adults, at least at this age! Good news NMC
