you may all remember me being worried about my ds not talking

well now he has started to try and talk he is 2.7 and managing to communicate by saying single words although now has started putting 2 words together

he has just started pre school now and gets on fine although does not attempt to communicate with any body will only answer when spoken to

speech therapist came yesterday and is concerened of his level of understanding although he doeas all that i ask of him so not sure if has problem or not

i am concerened for the lack of conversation but in his own way he does try to communicate so not sure now if i'm panicking over nothing

3 months ago wasnt talking wouldnt copy what we were saying now he does although cannot pronounce certain letters he is doing it

so i'm hoping given another 3 months he would of taken a great leap and be inniciating conversation

has anyone else had same problem and has there children started communicating normally?

i think he has it there i just think he doesnt do what he doesnt want to as all stuff she wanted him to do he appeared to not understand

i played similar game and he done all i asked but obvious problems with communication i just need to know he will progress same as other dc his age if he has made this progress in so many months i really hope in 3 more he will be astonishing us again

to all that replied last time about your dc and speech i would love to know how your little ones are getting on now

My little boy is nearly 5 and is only using single words and some two words sentences. He is autistic, but I am not sure you have anything to worry about with your DS. An ASD specialist explained to me that it's not just delayed speech you need to look out for (as many kids have that and it sorts itself out) but a LACK OF DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE. For instance, my DS didn't seem to want or need to communicate with me at 2 years old, even with gestures like pointing. He used my arm to reach something, almost as if it were a tool. It sounds like your DS is communicating pretty well and as you say, maybe he just didn't want to play ball with the SALT. If he has no other behaviours, I would think he may just have speech delay. What might be an idea is the Baby Bumblebee DVD's - they are great as they teach new words, numbers etc. Good luck!

Bubblagirl, my ds also had (has?) speech delay although although he has never been referred to a SALT.

2.7 is still pretty young imo - Ds's speech didn't take off until he around 3 iirc.

One thing I've picked up over time is to try not to make your child talk as it may be counter-productive. I can recommend a book called 'Babytalk' by Dr Sally Ward which has lots of ideas for ecouraging speech and understanding, and discusses development in layman's terms.

thank you so much he has come along way in this last 3-4 months and we never believed he would get here so i'm sure given another 3 months another milestone would have been reached

they make you panic as they tell you he is so far behind and should be doing this and that by now but in my mind i believe he will get there when he is ready

thank you

My dd had the following progress:
2 yrs - no speech, could understand loads
3 yrs - odd words (single only)
3.5 yrs - started joining words together
4yrs - had about 80 words, most 3 together, did not talk at nursery
4.5yrs - small sentences, 3-4 words, still only said odd word at nursery
5yrs (now) - in reception, talks up a storm, complex 8-10 word sentences. Still below average in some sounds.

aquariusmum · 17/01/2008 12:14

emandules, is your DD's pronunciation of words;clear? As well as being autistic, it's been suggested that my DS has verbal dyspraxia, ie he can't pronounce words properly, particularly when they don't end in vowels (eg he can say mummy, but can't say mum). Just wondering if anyone out there shares this issue?

emandjules · 17/01/2008 12:48

most words are clear to strangers, just some sounds are immature. We thought em might be autistic but it turns out she has sensory issues that may have caused it.

my ds can not do words beginning with b, s, f,m d, but can say all singular can say mama but says nunny when calling me
