My yr10 daughter has ADHD, Severe Anxiety and POTs (auto nervous system disorder affecting blood pressure and includes daily headaches, chest pain and fatigue) and her psychiatrist and her neurologist recommended she get extra time in her exams - however her private school has chosen not to give this to her. The school's Head of SEN is also an educational psych so could test her if she wanted to and we also offered to pay privately for her to be tested but they have not taken us up on this. Contrastingly, I have similar disabilities to my daughter and as an adult was given extra time for these in my recent GCSEs. I spoke to SENDIAS and they said because my daughter's school is private they can choose to support her fully or not at all.
I would be grateful if anyone has any extra exam time stories they would be OK about sharing. I am trying to get a gauge whether its reasonable for me to go back to the school and ask them to reconsider. Thank you.

DD doesn’t need any extra testing. In this situation a form 8 is not required and should not be completed, JCQ guidelines are clear on this. Evidence of DD’s disabilities from the psychiatrist and neurologist is enough. The school may be independent but they are still obliged to make reasonable adjustments for DD’s disabilities as per the Equality Act.

What about rest breaks? And would using a laptop be easier for DD than writing by hand?

Is it extra time she needs or rest breaks?

For extra time you have to meet quite strict criteria, I think usually regarding processing speed and/or handwriting.

DD2 gets extra time due to processing and handwriting but doesn't currently have the stamina to even get through a whole exam.

Teen those with disabilities can get extra time without having to meet the strict standardised score criteria that is in place for those with learning difficulties and without a form 8 being completed. There’s more information on pg 36.

Thanks Large , live and learn.
Why would the school not want to assess for extra time?

I can only think of 2 reasons, a) they can’t be bothered with the extra work (perhaps as a result of the relationship between home and school having already broken down), or b) they genuinely don’t think the pupil meets the requirements of the disability having a “substantial and long-term adverse effect on his/her speed of working”.
