Hi, just wanted some insight in to those with similar experiences. My twins are 2yrs 3 months. Both non verbal. Alot of ASD traits along side. But just wondered those whod toddlers where still non verbal at this age did they eventually develop good speech? Or have they remained non verbal. Did they also have traits of ASD?/ or received a diagnosis?

My son is so frustrated at the minute his meltdowns becoming more frequent where he will scream and scream throw himself backwards repeatedly hit his head on the floor i just wish he could communicate with us to help him get across what he wants. He does take our hand and try and show us but doesnt point. He has some understanding but i would say there is a delay here also.

Appreciate any responses 😊

Are you getting advice from anywhere already?
Portage ?
Nursery ?
SaLT ?
OT ?

Some services will be available locally - SaLT and OT advice and support lines for example. Autism Outreach support groups. Contact support groups. KIDS support groups. But it will depend on where you are in the country.

You can book a SaLT appt through iCan

And we have recently started with SALT who are giving us different stratagies to try with them but just wanted abit of insight from others how other little ones got on. I worry about speech not coming i cant help it x

Hi my son saw salt from 18m-5yrs. We saw paediatrician when he was just 2, was referred to pathway and diagnosed at 3. He now has a ehcp and a one to one support in mainstream school.
At 18m he could only say 3 words and didn't really respond to us. His meltdowns were horrific. We used lots of visuals. So daily routines were photographed and shown everyday. If we went anywhere new lots of pictures in advance. We have a fairly consistent routine. His speech massively improved around the age of 5 but although he can say all words now his understanding is different. So I could ask him 'are you going to eat your carrots? ' he would probably say yes because he has learnt that yes is an appropriate answer in most situations. But it doesn't mean he's going to eat his carrots! Communication definitely does help reduce meltdowns tho.
