SALT for autism/social communication disorder

Hi there, my son (8 years old) is under the diagnosis process for ASD at the moment. He struggles a great deal socially- has never made friends, often makes silly noises when spoken to even with people he knows well, can't seem to join conversations or games with peers, often struggles to express himself calmly and appropriately when he is upset or something unexpected has happened.
It has been suggested to me that a speech therapist referral might be an idea. He has no technical difficulties with speech though, just the social communication side of things.
Does anyone have any experience of SALT for children with ASD/social communication issues? Was it hard to get a referral for this sort of thing (we are currently in conversations with the school who seem keen to help)? And what sort of intervention did you receive if you did manage to get a referral?
I may be pursuing something that will come to nothing but just keen to explore all avenues of possible help for my son. Thanks in advance.

SALT is about much more than the physical ability to speak, it would definitely help someone with ASD.

DS3 gets SALT via his EHCP so didn’t need to go via the normal referral route. It wasn’t easy to get it included, but neither was it very difficult and we didn’t need to appeal for it. For him the main focus is on his pragmatic language difficulties, helping with social skills and also with his comorbid SM.

Thank you so much @AReallyUsefulEngine ..that's really helpful. I am hopeful that the team will be able to offer some help once they receive the school's referral. Thanks again
