Hello,

My DD 12 is in year 8 and does LAMDA Public Speaking exams. She has a diagnosis of level 1 autism. One area she really struggles with, is facial expressions. She is just starting her grade 5 and already has grades 3 and 4. On both occasions she has missed out on a distinction, due to losing a few points due to ‘use of body language and facial expressions’ these are areas she really struggles with. She is feeling disheartened. She has literally done so so well! But what she sees, is she has to work so much harder to get a lower grade than her peers. Does anyone else’s kids do LAMDA? Do you know if they take sen into consideration?

If it is like other types of exams they will allow access arrangements and reasonable adjustments, but won’t do anything that will alter the integrity of the qualification, which is what it would do if the mark scheme was altered.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am wondering what access arrangements there could be? What do other kids find helpful. She gets 25% extra time in normal exams but I don’t think that would be helpful for lamda. I think what would be helpful is if she did a little mimi speech before the real one, to the examiner to relax her. Not sure if that is a realistic thing to request though.

Their website gives examples of access arrangements as extra time, accessible assessment material, sign language interpreters.

Ahh ok, thank you. I’ll have a look :)
