Dyslexia, Behavioural Optometrist

DD2, 17 just formally diagnosed with dyslexia (not exactly a surprise).
It has been recommended she see a behavioural optometrist.

Has anyone had any experience? Are they 'useful'?

Following as came here to ask the exact same question for the exact same reason!

We are now on a waiting list, hoping to be seen in the summer holidays.

I have since read, prompted by another thread somewhere on here, that there is no proof that coloured filters really work (when I read that I did a cursory search and that does seem to be the conclusions).

Anywhere, you find them through here: www.babo.co.uk/

I would encourage you to consider the purchase of a c-pen . It is a scanner the size of a highlighter that "reads" aloud the words on a page
cpen.com
There are several reviews on YouTube that explain how it works.
Certainly a powerful tool for those with dyslexia.

@MatchaTea £260 is pricey but not totally unreasonable (unlike another I saw advertised). Do you have experience of it?

I am on the financial board of our school. We had a request to purchase them from the support coordinator, we approved a first lot of 10 pens. It was so successful, we approved 20 more to be used in class at the discretion of teachers. Quite a difference in student engagement. In class, students use earphones and they can follow the text when teacher hands out sheets. Easier for them to understand questions in test.

Thank you, that' really interesting.

I personally think there is also a component of confidence by handing something to a child and telling them, this could really help you.

Maybe buy it on Amazon and return if it is not for you?

It can be included in DD’s EHCP and funded that way.
