We live in london and looking to move to oxford in next year.
My son has HFA and has EHCP in place. So looking for mainstream secondary schools that has good SEN support.

I am new to this country and have some questions regarding secondary education.

  1. Is there any secondary schools with ASD unit like we have in primary with ASD unit.
  2. What age / in which year can I apply for a place in secondary.
  3. Is there any state schools that has both primary, secondary.
TIA

  1. There are ARPs in Oxfordshire.
  1. The EHCP has to be amended naming the secondary placement by 15th February of Y6. Prior to that there needs to be a review, usually held in the autumn term of Y6.
  1. I believe there are a couple of all through schools in Oxfordshire,

Be aware if you move LA the new LA will review and potentially amend the EHCP, reassess or even cease to maintain it.

Hi imitatingdory,
Thanks for your reply. Could you please elaborate ARPs. And thank you I am aware of changing county needs to amend EHCP as you mentioned in my earlier post.

ARPs are additionally resourced provisions i.e. units/bases in schools as per your first question. Sometimes called specialised or enhanced resourced provisions/units/bases.

Swalcliffe Park School has a good reputation.

It's an autism specific school consistently rated "Outstanding" by Ofsted. It might be worth considering as many students with ASD find the transition from primary to secondary overwhelming as the majority of MS secondary schools are so big, busy and noisy.

SP offers GCSEs, B Tech qualifications, apprenticeships and links with other MS schools and colleges for other courses.

Hi Ellie56, is it easy to get the place in that school. We currently live in Hounslow borough. Can we apply through LA or can I move LA first then apply for a place?

You can do either, but if you don’t move first a) you are likely to need a residential place due to the distance, which will be harder to get, and b) Oxfordshire LA may not name the school when you do move.

Hi Imitatingdory, so are you saying better to move first near by then apply for the place right ?

That’s a decision only you can make. Moving before phase transfer year has pros and cons but so does waiting until after the EHCP has been amended for phase transfer.

No, it is not easy to get into this school. They hand pick children that they think will fit. We have just been turned down, but you might be lucky, OP.
