Experiences of meeting SEN

What are people's experiences of meeting the SENCO for the first time please? DS's (8) teacher has asked if he can refer him to the SENCO as he is struggling with concentration.

He isn't meeting the standard in writing or maths even though the teacher feels the information is in his head. He just can't get it down and is very easily distracted. I've noticed this at home too when doing homework... dropping pencil constantly, too many trips to the toilet, sitting on the edge of the seat etc.

Conversely he is greater depth in reading which fits with the 'it's in his head'. He devours fiction and non fiction and can recall what he's read in great detail.

The teacher says his behaviour is generally good. I'm at a bit of a loss to know how we can do to help him and what the SENCO might say / ask?

DS is my youngest. I have two older children but they never had any sort of issue with concentrating.

I don't know if the teacher maybe thinks he has traits of something like ADD?

First of all, just to say it's nothing to worry about. Sencos are genuinely harmless and just want the best for the child. They will just explain the situation, tell you the areas of concern and what support he is receiving. They might want to involve external agencies to assess what's going on. Honestly nothing to.worry about.

Thanks for the reassurance @Newdad2022, I am worrying! Especially about other agencies which I assume will be chronically underfunded with massive waiting lists.

We all have Covid at the moment so I'm back to homeschooling him and I'm struck by how much he has improved since the last round of it. I even managed to send some emails when he was doing his maths sheets. He ran away to the garden as soon as I tried to take a call mind....

Just talki about how he's doing and how school could better support him. It's an opportunity to get more of an idea of how he's getting on etc. other agencies may be like ot, school will arrange depends on area but can usually get a one off appointment fairly quickly. Senco should be a good support and source of information.
